The Maheshwari was designed in the 18th century by the queen Ahilyabai Holkar, who wanted a saree for the women of her court that was light, cool, and dignified. It is woven on the banks of the Narmada in cotton-silk, with a reversible border and a rui-phool (cotton-flower) buti. This river-blue piece is the original Maheshwari palette.
