Most of the Banarasi sarees sold in Hyderabad are powerloom, marketed as handloom. The price difference between the two can be six times for the same visual at a distance, which is why this guide exists. Below is how to tell, where to look, and the fair price band for each weight.
Turn the saree over. A handloom Banarasi shows long, untrimmed float threads on the reverse, irregular zari joins, and visible kadhua insets where each motif begins fresh. A powerloom Banarasi has a clean, machine-finished reverse with no floats. Any shop that resists flipping the saree over is telling you what you need to know.
Daily-wear handloom Banarasi, fifteen to thirty-five thousand. Mid-weight festive Banarasi, thirty-five to seventy-five thousand. Bridal-weight kadhua or jangla in tested zari, seventy-five thousand to two-and-a-half lakh. Fully kadhua shikargah or bridal pieces in pure silver-gilt zari, two-and-a-half to six lakh. Anything dramatically below these bands for a 'pure handloom Banarasi' is almost certainly powerloom or mixed-warp.
For curated heritage handloom with karigar provenance, a by-appointment atelier is the primary path in the city, with direct sourcing from Madanpura, Pilikothi and Lallapura looms in Varanasi. For a first-time certified-silk pickup, a national mall-format chain is a fair starting point.
Silk Mark, indicates pure mulberry silk. Karigar signature on the reverse, indicates a specific weaver is accountable for the piece. Written certificate of authenticity from the seller, indicates the seller is willing to stand behind the saree in writing. Any single one of these is good, all three together is the gold standard.
