How to Care for and Store Pure Silk Sarees
A pure silk saree, cared for correctly, will outlive you. The rules are simple: never wash it at home, refold it every three months along a new line, store it in soft muslin (never plastic), keep it away from direct sunlight and humidity, and dry-clean only with a specialist who knows zari.
We re-fold and re-tissue our archive sarees every quarter, including a 1971 Kanjivaram that belonged to Amrita's grandmother. It still looks like it was woven last month.
Never wash silk at home
Pure silk is a protein fibre. Water, detergent, and agitation break down the sericin coating and dull the natural lustre forever. If your saree gets a stain, blot (do not rub) with a dry white cotton cloth and take it to a silk-specialist dry cleaner within 48 hours.
Refold every three months
Silk creased along the same fold line for too long will eventually tear at the fold. Every three months, open the saree fully, refold it along a different line, and place tissue paper at every new fold to cushion the crease. This is the single most important habit for heirloom longevity.
Storage, muslin, not plastic
Wrap each saree in a soft, unbleached cotton muslin or a clean cotton pillowcase. Never plastic, never polythene, they trap moisture and cause yellowing and mildew. Store flat in a wooden almirah, ideally with a few neem leaves or cloves as a natural moth deterrent. Avoid naphthalene balls near zari, they corrode the metal thread.
Humidity and light
Humidity is silk's worst enemy in Indian cities. Use a small silica gel pack in your saree drawer and replace it every six months. Direct sunlight will fade dyes within weeks; even strong indirect light through a window will dull colours over a year.
Dry cleaning, choose the cleaner, not the price
Only use a dry cleaner who has handled real zari before. Ask them directly: do they spot-clean zari with a separate, milder solvent? If they hesitate, find another cleaner. Trisha Silks recommends specific cleaners in Hyderabad and Mumbai to our patrons.
