How to Drape a Kanjivaram for a South Indian Bride
There are three ways the Trisha Silks atelier drapes a bridal Kanjivaram: the traditional Iyer/Iyengar Madisar (a nine-yard drape that doubles as a salwar), the modern South Indian classic with a pleated pallu over the left shoulder, and the seedha pallu for the wedding muhurtham. The drape should never overwhelm the saree, the Kanjivaram is the heroine.

Before you begin
Wear a well-fitted, ankle-length cotton underskirt with a flat front (no elastic gathers, they distort the pleats). Wear your bridal blouse and your jewellery first, then drape. Have safety pins and a long mirror.
The modern South Indian drape (Nivi with a pleated Kanjivaram pallu)
1. Tuck the plain end of the saree into the underskirt at your right hip, taking it around your waist once and tucking it in along the way.
2. Bring the saree back to the front and make 5 to 7 deep pleats at the centre, all the same width as your hand. Tuck the pleats into the underskirt.
3. Take the remaining fabric around your back to the front and bring the heavy zari pallu over your left shoulder.
4. Make 5 sharp pleats in the pallu, pin them at the shoulder, and let the pallu fall down your back to mid-calf.
The seedha pallu (muhurtham drape)
Worn during the wedding ceremony itself in Tamil Brahmin tradition. Identical to the Nivi above, but the pallu comes from the back over the right shoulder so the zari falls in front and covers the head when needed.
The Madisar (nine yards)
Worn at the kashi yatra and the oonjal ceremony. Requires a true nine-yard Kanjivaram (Madisar saree), a regular six-yard will not work. This is a draper's job; ask the atelier to send one.

How long does it take to drape a bridal Kanjivaram?+
A skilled draper takes 12 to 15 minutes for the modern South Indian drape and 25 to 30 minutes for the Madisar nine-yard drape. Allow 45 minutes total with jewellery and final adjustments.
Can I drape a bridal Kanjivaram by myself?+
Yes for the modern Nivi drape with a pleated pallu, most brides learn it with one practice session. The Madisar nine-yard drape is much harder and is almost always done by a professional draper or an experienced family member.
What underskirt colour should I wear with a red Kanjivaram?+
Always match the underskirt to the body of the saree, not the border. For a red Kanjivaram with a green border, the underskirt should be red. A mismatched underskirt shows through at the pleats.
