How NRIs Buy Heritage Sarees from India, A Practical Guide

From the Trisha Silks Journal · Hyderabad
Editorial portrait of an NRI patron in a heritage handloom saree chosen via a private video viewing

Buying a heritage Indian saree from abroad used to mean a one-week trip to Hyderabad, Chennai or Varanasi. Today, with a thoughtful atelier and a fast internet connection, you can run the entire process from your living room, and many of our most discerning patrons now prefer it.

We run the same standards on a video viewing as on a Jubilee Hills walk-in. North-facing natural light, drape on a full stand, zari close-ups, written shortlist with prices, insured shipment.
The Maison's Note

Step 1 to the discovery WhatsApp

Message the atelier with your occasion, rough budget, colour palette, time zone, and the city your wedding will be held in. A serious atelier will respond within a day with proposed video slots and a soft shortlist.

Step 2 to the video viewing itself

A 45 to 60 minute call. Each shortlisted saree is draped on a stand under daylight; you ask for close-ups of the zari, reverse, border. A senior consultant, not a salesperson, should be on the call. A burn-test on a single thread can be done on camera if you want to verify purity.

Step 3 to sizing the blouse from abroad

Two methods. (A) Send a reference blouse you already own. (B) Have a local tailor take the 16-point body chart the atelier sends. For bridal blouses, ask for a muslin trial before embroidery begins. The atelier should offer a 100% fit guarantee.

Step 4 to shipping, customs and returns

Insured FedEx or DHL with full customs documentation. Personal-use saree shipments under most countries' de minimis thresholds enter duty-free. Returns: a serious atelier offers a 7-day inspection window with original tags intact and a full refund (less shipping) for any reason.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked

Is it safe to buy expensive sarees from India online?+

Yes, if the atelier uses insured FedEx/DHL with full customs documentation, offers a 7-day return window, and is willing to conduct a video viewing and burn-test before payment. Avoid sellers who refuse video proof or wire-only payment without an invoice.

How do I avoid customs problems shipping a saree from India?+

Use an HSN-registered exporter who declares full value with the correct HSN code (5007 for silk fabric, 6217 for stitched garments). Personal-use shipments under the de minimis (US $800, UK £135, EU €150) generally enter duty-free.

Will the blouse fit if it is stitched in India?+

Yes, if the atelier uses a 16-point body chart, ships a muslin trial for bridal pieces, and offers a fit guarantee with free re-cutting. We do this routinely.
